Courses in Instrumental Music
Grassfield High School offers a variety of options for students who wish to explore instrumental music. The band classes are for the intermediate to advanced performer. They are designed for students who wish to play their instrument in an ensemble environment, and focuses on the development of skills, relationships, and attitudes necessary for an outstanding performance.
It is the directors’ philosophy to place each student in an environment in which their musical development is maximized. Many factors are considered when placing a student: year-long performance in band class, attendance, practice habits, and further development of musical skills (district auditions, private lessons, etc…). Not every student will be placed in the group of their choice. Just remember that there are many talented musicians in the band program, and you will be a part of a fantastic musical experience no matter what group you participate in.
All ninth grade students are placed in the Ninth Grade Band. This is done to indoctrinate the 9th grade students to the Grassfield High School band program as well as begin their year in familiar surroundings. Band Students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades are placed in the Concert Band, or can audition for placement in Symphonic Band. Percussion students who are in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades are placed in the Percussion Class.
Seating in Ensembles
The seating in each ensemble is determined by the director. Overall GPA in band, playing test average, range capability, participation and ranking in district band auditions, and participation in extra-curricular performing activities are all factors considered when seating students. Seating is changed on a regular basis at the discretion of the band director. There is no system of challenging for chair placement.
